Alcohol, Cognition and Communication

Typically, 8-11 hours spent in two separate in-person sessions. PARTICIPATION INVOLVES: Consuming 3 alcoholic beverages, completing a series of interviews, filling out self-report questionnaires, a brief drinking assessment administered via interview, and completing a set of behavioral assessments. COMPENSATION: Up to $200 for the duration of the study. Your involvement would require that you initially come to our lab on the ASU campus to complete a series of interviews and surveys that would take approximately 120 minutes (2 HOURS). You would return to spend an extended period in the lab within the following two weeks. During this session you would consume three beverages containing alcohol, and be asked to perform a number of cognitive and behavioral tasks. We would then monitor your blood alcohol concentration, and arrange for you to be driven home when you are at a safe level. You would be compensated $12 an hour plus a potential bonus for performance on the behavioral tasks. Because we will be serving you alcohol, you will need to remain in the lab until your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reaches a safe level (below 0.03 g %). The experiment begins between 11AM to 2PM , and you should expect to stay until 8PM – 11PM the day that you are scheduled for participation in the second session. Individuals who metabolize alcohol more slowly may need to remain longer. In order to participate, you cannot drink alcohol or use nonprescription drugs for 24 hours prior to the second session. You will also need to refrain from eating for 4 hours prior to this session. Snacks (chips, salsa, pretzels, & sodas) will be provided to you at no cost after data collection is completed. If you wish to order additional food (e.g., pizza) you will need to bring money. Movies, board games, and Xbox are available to participants while they are waiting for their BAC to return to .03. It is very important that you do not drive a vehicle or ride a bike to, or make arrangements for friends to pick you up from, the experiment. We will arrange and pay for transportation (i.e., taxi cab or ASU shuttle) to your home at the end of the evening. We are not allowed to arrange transportation to a location other than your home address. More questions? Please call 480-965-5601 or email us at SAIL@asu.edu.
